El Palto

Tasting Notes: Sweet, bright plum & berry

Once again Algrano have helped us source another delicious coffee direct from the growers.

When we tasted this blend from the Juan Marco El Palto co-operative in northern Peru we found it super sweet and fruity and knew it would make a delicious lighter roast filter or cold brew.

The co-op’s commitment to social and environmental care was also an influencing factor, of course. Together the 188 co-op members have achieved both Fair Trade and organic status.

  • Location

Peru lies along the western coastline of South America and has a very diverse climate, with tropical and dry desert areas as well as a temperate to cold climate in the Andean Mountains.

Coffee grows on the eastern slopes of the Andes mountain range and production takes place in three main areas: the central highlands of the Chanchamayo area, the northern highlands in the Amazonas and San Martin regions and the southern highlands.

Peru grows mainly Arabica coffee; Typica accounts for 70%, Caturra about 20%, and 10% is other varieties. The harvesting season begins in April and peaks in June-September.

Most Peruvian coffee production takes place in the highlands between 1,000 and 1,800 meters above sea level. Coffee typically grows under shade with an average plant density of 2,000 plants per hectare.

Peru is the world’s leader in organic coffee export.

  • Farm

The Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros Juan Marco “El Palto” (JUMARP) was set up by José Carranza Barboza in 2003, together with 35 other smallholder farmers. There are now over 300 families involved, all farming small plots of land in the “Selva Alta” in northern Peru. This is a specific type of ecosystem found in Peru and Mexico, with dense and humid forests.

El Palto blend comes from the Yamón district, Utcubamba, province, Amazonas department in northern Peru. The blend includes Caturra, Typica, Bourbon and Pache varieties. All coffees produced are organic and fair trade certified.

  • Processing

The washing process has several stages: selective picking by hand, fermentation control for 48 hours and drying in solar tents in trays for 12 days to improve the quality.
