Bench Maji

Tasting Notes: Sweet cherry, tea & caramel notes

In Ethiopia it is not uncommon for coffee to grow in forests, with trees benefitting from the natural shade. Bench Maji coffee is an organic coffee grown at an altitude of 900 -1200 metres and harvested by hand. The altitude and natural processing method helps give crisp acidity and sweetness.

More about this product

  • Location

Bench Maji is one of the zones of the Ethiopian Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regions (SNNPR).
The river Omo, that feeds Lake Turkana, runs parallel with the eastern border of Bench Maji. Another famed landmark is the dense forest of Bench Maji. While deforestation influenced other parts of Ethiopia, Bench Maji remarkably remained unharmed.

  • Farm / Coop

Bench Maji Forest Coffee Producer Farmers' Cooperative Union was established in July 2005 by 14 founder member primary cooperatives (PCs) to operate in Bench Maji Zone, south-western Ethiopia, to engage in the marketing of coffee on behalf of its members and provide inputs and other household & production necessities. The number of individual members of the founder PCs was 4,968 with 23% women.
Bench Maji Union is made up of various smallholders growing coffee organically under the natural forest canopy.

  • Processing

This coffee from the Bench Maji Union is natural processed. Hand-picked coffee cherries are laid out to dry on patios in the sun. They are regularly turned to prevent fermentation of the fruit before being hulled to remove the dried fruit and parchment layers. The natural process adds sweetness and cherry notes to this coffee.
